SUMMARY:Fall Native Plant Sale & Monarch Day
DESCRIPTION:Choose from a variety of fall-flowering Pennsylvania native wildflowers\, including asters\, goldenrods\, milkweeds\, coneflowers\, black-eyed susans\, and more. The sale will also feature a selection of native vines\, grasses\, ferns\, trees\, and shrubs. Learn from our host of native plant volunteers who are dedicated to helping you find the perfect plants for your yard. All plants are separated by habitat\, such as sunny/hot or shady/wet. We make it as easy as possible for you to buy plants that will thrive in your home landscape.  Cash and Checks are preferred. More information can be found here. \nThis year’s sale will also feature a special raffle item: a chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) seedling grown at Howard Nursery from an acorn gathered from the Oley Sacred Oak\, with permission from the landowner. The Oley Sacred Oak is believed to be the oldest tree in Pennsylvania. The seedling offers a unique opportunity for a lucky raffle winner to grow a living descendant of this remarkable historic tree. More details about the raffle will be available at the event. \nThe Fall Native Plant Sale coincides with Hawk Mountain’s annual Monarch Day\, also taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families can enjoy kids’ activities\, hands-on learning stations\, and a live monarch tagging demonstration at 1 p.m. Along with the plant sale\, visitors of all ages have a great opportunity to explore native species\, learn about pollinators and wildlife\, and discover ways to support local habitats.

SUMMARY:Hawk Mountain: Music on the Mountain: Berks Sinfonietta
DESCRIPTION:Mozart on the Mountain: Berks Sinfonietta returns to perform June 13 \nHawk Mountain Sanctuary and the Berks Sinfonietta will present the 6th annual Music on the Mountain\, a live presentation of classical selections on Saturday\, June 13 at 2 PM in the Sanctuary’s accessible Amphitheater. The Sinfonietta will perform selections that celebrate the outdoors and the changing seasons that occur in early June. This year’s program will also feature three regional premieres\, including the work of Amy Beach\, a noted woman composer\, which is the group’s way of celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary this year. \nAdmission costs $20 for Hawk Mountain Members and $25 for non-members\, available to buy online. Ticketholders may bring their own folding chairs or blanket\, and a musician mixer with a live raptor and light refreshments will be provided inside the Visitor Center immediately following the event. \nThe Sinfonietta will present a program filled with expressive works in the serene mountain setting. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s Overture: The Fair Melusine and will then feature three regional premieres: Mel Bonis’ Suite en forme de valses\, Amy Beach’s Romance\, and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Harnham Down\, Impression for Orchestra. After intermission\, the concert will come to a powerful close with Mozart’s well-known Symphony No. 40 in G Minor. \n“This year’s Music on the Mountain concert continues a wonderful partnership with Berks Sinfonietta and offers guests a unique opportunity to enjoy world-class music in a beautiful outdoor setting\,” says Sanctuary President Sean Grace. “Our Amphitheater provides the perfect space to relax and enjoy an afternoon of music while also supporting two local non-profit organizations.” \nMusic on the Mountain is made possible thanks to a generous sponsorship by Dr. and Mrs. Barton Smith and Susan H. Smith\, and the program will be held in memory of William I. Smith\, Jr.\, M.D. \nBerks Sinfonietta is a nonprofit chamber orchestra serving the Reading and Berks County communities. Its mission is to expand the appreciation for\, and to promote the art of classical music. As a local ensemble\, the orchestra consists exclusively of musicians from the community\, ranging in skill level from students and talented amateurs to area professionals. \nThe 2\,500-acre Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the world’s first refuge for birds of prey and is open to the public year-round by trail-fee or membership\, which in turn supports the non-profit organization’s raptor conservation mission and local-to-global research\, training\, and education programs. To learn more about Hawk Mountain or other programs\, please call 610-756-6961 or visit www.hawkmountain.org.
