SUMMARY:Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Informational Hike
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in counting birds for science while enjoying scenic views? If so\, we invite you to learn about volunteer opportunities at the Bake Oven Knob Hawk Watch during an informational hike and bird walk on Saturday\, April 15! \nAbout the Hawk Count:\nFor over 60 years\, volunteers have counted migrating birds of prey at Bake Oven Knob near Germansville\, PA. From their perch atop the Kittatinny Ridge\, LGNC’s Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Team records an average of 10\,000+ migrating birds of prey each autumn! These observations are reported to the Hawk Migration Association of North America to help scientists study bird populations and migration patterns. \nLGNC welcomes new volunteers to join our Hawk Count Team this year! The Hawk Count runs daily during daylight hours from August 15 through the end of November. During this timeframe\, you may volunteer as little or as much as you like. If you are not comfortable identifying or recording birds\, you can still help with the count. You do not need to be an experienced birder or hawk watcher to contribute! \nHow to Get Involved:\nOn Saturday\, April 15\, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to noon\, LGNC will be hosting an informational hike and bird walk for anyone who would like to learn more about the hawk count. We will meet at the Bake Oven Knob parking lot and hike the Appalachian Trail up to the South Lookout of the Hawk Watch. We would love to see you there! \nIf you can’t join us on April 15\, no worries! LGNC will be hosting additional information sessions and trainings later this year. \nIf you are interested in joining us on April 15 or getting involved with the Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Team\, please email LGNC Director\, Chad Schwartz\, at chad.schwartz@lgnc.org.

SUMMARY:Running in Place: Why Race Matters in Outdoor Recreation Spaces-Andrea Armstrong\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will explore why people of color participate in outdoor recreation activities less often than white people. We will also consider recent research on why people of color feel less welcome on recreation trails in the Lehigh Valley. \nDr. Armstrong is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Science & Studies at Lafayette College. \nTypically\, our Speaker Series events are held in-person\, but this year we are going to be doing things a little bit differently. Speakers will be conducting their talks “virtually” through Zoom. Following registration\, you will be provided with a link for a Zoom conference\, which will give you access to the event at the scheduled date and time. \nIf you are familiar with and already have Zoom installed on your device\, then you are all set. If you have never used Zoom before\, no worries! Upon clicking the link\, Zoom will automatically install itself and you’ll be ready to go! Zoom is a small\, safe application that allows you to participate in video conferencing events such as this one! While a camera and microphone are not essential to view the presentation\, they do make interaction with the speaker possible during question and answer sessions. Click here for more information on Zoom: https://zoom.us. \nWe hope to see virtually!

SUMMARY:History of the Lehigh River
DESCRIPTION:Local historian Louise Bugbee will lead a journey through time along the Lehigh River. The Lehigh River functioned as the main artery of this region for the Native Americans\, fostered the growth of early America\, and contributed to the Industrial Revolution. It was loved\, used and abused in turn. But things changed\, and the Lehigh is once again running clean and clear\, and is a beloved asset to the people who live within its basin.
