Since 1970, June has been recognized as Pride Month, an international celebration of the LGBTQ+ Community. The timing commemorates the pivotal Stonewall Riots of June 1969 when LGBTQ+ individuals in New York City bravely resisted police violence. Stonewall is widely recognized as the primary catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ political activism movement. Learn more here.
DCNR’s Mosaic Mission
DCNR is dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who enjoys our lands. Celebrating Pride Month is a way for us to show our commitment to honoring and respecting all people, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. We want everyone to feel valued and be able to fully enjoy all we offer no matter how they identify or who they love.
Our parks wouldn’t be as breathtaking if only one type of plant existed. The spectrum of wildlife isn’t simply additive; it’s foundational to the experience of our lands. Similarly, diversity of thought benefits our agency. Just like nature thrives on variety, a diverse workforce strengthens innovation, fosters a broader range of perspectives, and helps us serve the citizens of Pennsylvania more effectively.
Promoting Inclusion and Belonging at DCNR
There are several ways we can show support to our LGBTQ+ visitors and peers in the outdoors and our workspaces. One way is by using pronouns to encourage respect for all gender identities. Check out this 2-minute video to learn more. Another way is using inclusive language on signs, brochures, and at visitor centers to signal that all identities are welcome. We can also host special hikes or offer educational programs highlighting the communities’ contributions to conservation.
At DCNR, we want everyone to feel welcome and able to be themselves. That’s why Pride and Mosaic matter to us. Both remind us to create safe, inclusive spaces where all identities are respected. By infusing Mosaic principles into everything that we do, we ensure that all people can connect with and enjoy our lands and thrive in the workplace culture that embraces inclusion and belonging.
