Most people have fond memories of their childhood years spent on playgrounds. But for those with mobility struggles, finding opportunities for play can be challenging. And while new parks are typically constructed with inclusivity in mind, older facilities are frequently off-limits.
In fall 2023 Dauphin County’s Fort Hunter Park began much-needed improvements to increase accessibility. The changes will establish an all-inclusive playground—including ramped equipment, rubberized surface, concrete paths, and upgraded restrooms—to make it easier for people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2023.
“This playground is over 20 years old and was due for a complete renovation, and we’re using this opportunity to create an environment that is accessible for all,” said Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Director Anthea Stebbins. (ABC 27 News, October 18, 2023)
Fort Hunter Park, located along the banks of the Susquehanna River at the base of the Kittatinny Ridge, contains 40 acres of open land, 10 historic buildings, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and ball fields. Visitors can enjoy hiking and picnicking, birdwatching, boating, park and mansion tours, and Native American educational workshops. Throughout history, the property has served as a war fort, a hub for frontier commerce, and an exclusive private estate.
